Meet Our Viola Instructors
Mary Alice McCann, M.M. Music Education
Mary Alice has spent her career immersed in string instruments, performing with orchestras including the Portland Symphony and the Aspen Summer Chamber Orchestra. She understands the unique qualities of viola and helps students appreciate what makes it distinct from violin, including its richer, deeper tone and its important role in ensemble music.
Oswald Backus, M.M. Classical Bass
Oswald's orchestral experience and classical training give him a strong understanding of viola's role in ensemble music. He helps students develop proper technique and musicianship while keeping lessons tailored to their interests and goals.
What Your Child Can Explore in Viola Lessons
Posture & Bow Technique
Viola is slightly larger and heavier than violin, so proper posture and bow technique matter from day one. Students learn how to hold the instrument comfortably, develop a smooth bowing motion, and build habits that support healthy playing as they advance.
Reading & Ear Training
Learning to read alto clef (which is unique to viola), play scales, and develop the intonation skills that string instruments require. Students build their ear alongside their reading so they can self-correct and play confidently.
