My Background
I come from a musical family and started piano at age three with my mom who taught a large piano studio. I went to sleep each night to the deep vibrations of my older sister practicing double bass in the same room. At eight, I joined what is now known as the New England Children’s Choir. For years, I spent Saturdays singing and intensely studying music: solfege, theory and all things related to musicianship. As a young adult, I spent entire summers in New Hampshire, studying and performing chamber music as a cellist at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music.
My path was clear, and I went on to get a Bachelors in Cello Performance from the University of Massachusetts, and later a Masters in Music Education from Boston University. Along the way, I’ve played with the Portland (Maine) Symphony, the Florida West Coast Symphony, and the Aspen Summer Chamber Orchestra. I also conducted a student ensemble, I Giovani Solisti, for three years, culminating in performances in Austria and Boston, premiering new works for chamber orchestra.
What is my favorite thing?
Most musicians wear many hats. My absolute favorite role is working one-on-one with students of all ages who have the desire to learn to play an instrument and discover the joy of making music!
Why study with me?
In my career, I have learned from some of the best musician educators in the world, so I have a huge base of pedagogical information that inspires my teaching. This helps my students learn and improve efficiently and get to experience the “joy factor” of making music as soon and as often as possible.
My Personal Qualities In my teaching I am: • Highly articulate • Organized and focused, but flexible when needed • Patient and kind • Energized but calm • Fun and supportive
My Philosophy of Education Music is a language that lives within all of us. It allows us to connect deeply to ourselves and to others, and to express ourselves in ways rarely possible with words.
This has instilled in me a life-long passion to mentor others in this profound language. I teach music to bring joy, connection, enlightenment, respect, comfort and beauty to the lives of others.
I do this with an open mind, a positive attitude, and deep respect for my students. I
make it a priority to get to know my students and see them clearly. Each student has different interests and needs, and I am there for them on their personal journey.
I bring compassion, consistency, warmth, and high expectations to my practice, and I am keenly aware that I am an important role model for my students. I give each student the chance to pursue their learning and explore ideas and self-expression from a place of comfort and calm. For me, there is no greater purpose or joy than nurturing my students through music education and witnessing how it enriches their lives and informs their sense of humanity.
