Hi, I'm Melanie!
I've been teaching for over 20 years across lesson schools, agencies, and private instruction, and I specialize in working with beginner-through-early-advanced players learning violin, piano, organ, harpsichord, and voice.
I've performed everything from orchestral and chamber music to sacred music, with a specialty in baroque performance for museums and historic sites. I currently serve as an organist for several Pennsylvania churches and bring an active performer's perspective to any students interested in trying performance themselves.
My Approach
My teaching is based on classical philosophy and music pedagogy. I want students to learn the full background and context of a piece, which helps them interpret pieces correctly while still leaving plenty of room for their own personality to come through. In fact, I believe strong technical foundations are what free students up for the improvisation and self-expression that are the heart of music.
My lessons build progressively, starting with foundational methods and moving into more formal technical work, including scales, drills, etudes, theory, memorization, and sight reading. I guide repertoire selection using standards set by the American String Teachers Association, the Suzuki method, and the Keyboard Teachers Guild.
Who I Work With
I love working with students of all ages, from true beginners to early advanced players, and I have specialized training in the Suzuki string method for younger string students. I'm a great fit for families who want a teacher who takes musical foundations seriously.
Background & Experience
I hold a double bachelor's degree in Violin Performance and Classics from William Paterson University and Montclair State University, along with extensive coursework in keyboard and vocal studies. I look forward to meeting you and hope to serve as a dependable guide for you or your family on the path of learning music.
